Do you need a law degree to build a career in compliance?

To answer this question, I analyzed >500 compliance roles published over the last 1.5 year across multiple regions (full list in the first comment).
Here is what the data reveals:
1) For most compliance roles (66%), a law degree is not required nor preferred. Only 19% of jobs strictly require it and 15% prefer it.
2) The higher you move in the career ladder, the more a law degree matters. For entry, junior and mid-level roles, only about 1 out of 4 jobs mentions a law degree as required/preferred. However, at the Senior and Executive level jobs, this number jumps to 50% (every 1 out of 2).
3) Geography matters – In North America, around 40% of roles require or prefer a law degree. In LATAM – only 28%.
4) In the US market, senior leadership compliance roles mentioning a law degree pay on average 20% more than roles without the law degree (USD 38k / per year more).
5) Even for some the best compliance roles on the market, many employers now use the “Law Degree or equivalent experience or some other qualifications”.
My conclusion: you can start and succeed in compliance without being a lawyer. But if your goal is to one day become a compliance executive, a law degree can become a powerful competitive advantage later in the journey.
